Special Report: Bomb explodes at San Diego school Thursday, May 8, 2008
A San Diego school was placed on lockdown early on Wednesday after a home-made bomb
exploded inside a garbage bin, but there were no injuries, police said.
San Diego Police Sergeant Kerry Tom said the bomb rattled the Wagenheim Middle School in the suburb of Mira Mesa at around 7.30am (0030
AEST Thursday), before most students had arrived for class.
A handful of students already on campus were ordered inside while students arriving at the school were told to stay away, police said.
The blast is the latest in a series of explosions involving home-made devices in the San Diego area.
On Sunday a pipe bomb packed with nails and shrapnel was detonated at the entrance to the city's federal
courthouse, but there were no injuries.
It followed a non-lethal bomb blast outside a FedEx office in the early hours of April 25.
